CLEANING SOLUTION

Packaged sterile saline is recommended (contact lens saline, eye drops, and other saline products should never be used on a body piercing).

CLEANING

At least twice a day, wash with sterile saline (recommended) or warm water. Always make sure you wash your hands before touching your piercing.

Apply enough sterile saline and clean your piercing with clean gauze. Do not put excessive efforts to get rid of crusts around piercing. Dry by gently patting with clean, disposable paper product (try not to use cloth towels as it can harbor bacteria and snag on jewelry, causing injury).

WHAT IS NORMAL?

  • INITIALLY: Some bleeding, swelling, pain, discomfort, clear discharge, bruising, tenderness, redness etc.

  • DURING HEALING: discolouration, itching, secretion of whitish-yellow clear fluid, tightness around the jewelry.

  • ONCE HEALED: the jewelry may not move freely in the piercing. Do not force it.

  • If you not perform your aftercare properly until it completely heals, infection or smelly body secretions (pus) may accumulate.

  • Your piercing may seem healed before the healing process is complete. This is because tissue heals from the outside in, and although it feels fine, the inside of the piercing remains fragile.

WHAT TO DO:

  • ALWAYS make sure you wash your hands before touching your piercing.

  • Avoid smoking, drinking alcohol in the first week of piercing, sleeping directly on your new piercing sites, and touching piercing.

  • Exercise is fine, but get cleaned up right after if possible to prevent from dirt and old sweat.

  • Make sure your bedding is clean. Wear clean, comfortable, breathable clothing.

WHAT TO AVOID:

  • Avoid cleaning with alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, soaps, iodine, etc. They can damage cells. Ointments might prevent necessary air circulation as well.

  • Avoid any products containing Benzalkonium Chloride (BZK) as it can irritate your piercing and delay your healing.

  • Avoid over-cleaning. This can delay your healing and cause irritation.

  • Avoid playing with the jewelry, excessive motion of the area, and vigorous cleaning. These activities can cause the formation of unsightly and uncomfortable scar tissue, migration, prolonged healing, and other complication.

  • Avoid stress and recreational drugs use, including excessive caffeine, nicotine and alcohol.

  • Avoid submerging the piercing in lakes, pools, hot tubs etc. Or, protect your piercing with waterproof wound sealant bandage.

  • Avoid all beauty and personal care products on or around the piercing including cosmetic, lotions, and sprays, etc.

Remember:

Remember to make an immediate appointment with your doctor if there are any problems with an area that is pierced that might indicate infection or complications (such as ongoing bleeding, pain, weeping, or swelling) that you are worried about.
